Caption: Ascension Island. Satellite image of Ascension island, which is found in the South Atlantic Ocean, 1207 kilometres northwest of Saint Helena. It covers an area of 1200 square kilometres. The island is a rocky peak of volcanic origin. The highest point is Green Mountain, which is 4533 kilometres high and covered in lush vegetation. Temperatures at sea level are 20-30 degrees centigrade. Ascension Island does not have an indigenous population. Its inhabitants comprise the employees and families of the organisations working on the island. Image taken on 24 February 2001 by Space Imaging's Ikonos satellite.
