Caption: Coral reef and island, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This is Ile Glorieuse (left), a 2.5-kilometre-wide French island in the Indian Ocean. It is covered in coconut palm trees and has formed on a coral reef. The reef is seen enclosing a shallow, sandy lagoon (green/pale blue) that is surrounded by deeper waters (dark blue). The Ile du Lys (far right) is a small rocky outcrop. Such islands form on top of coral reefs that themselves generally form on top of volcanic seamounts. Both a runway and a weather station are found on the island. This island lies north-west of Madagascar. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 17 June 2001.
