Caption: Coral platform surrounding the Fakarava Atoll. Atolls are islands consisting of a circular coral reef surrounding a shallow lagoon. An atoll develops when coral grows on top of a submerged volcano. Corals consist of small animals called polyps which secrete calcium carbonate. This forms a protective skeleton around them. When a polyp dies the skeleton remains and new polyps grow on top of it, forming a coral reef. Coral reefs are found in every ocean, but they prefer warm, shallow waters. Photographed in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia, Pacific Ocean.
