Caption: Istanbul and the Bosporus. False-colour satellite image of part of Turkey, showing the capital city, Istanbul (formerly Constantinople). The city sits on both sides of the Bosporus, the narrow waterway linking the Black Sea (top) with the Sea of Marmara (bottom). The red areas are part of the Yildiz Daglari mountain range, whilst the blue areas are sparse vegetation on lowlands. Istanbul was founded as a major trading centre in ancient times, and is often viewed as the gateway between Europe and Asia. The data for this image were gathered by a Landsat satellite.
