Caption: Hadrian's Wall in the light of the setting sun in winter, Northumberland National Park, England. The view looks eastwards to Crag Lough (the lake at upper left). To the right of the lake is a cliff. This cliff is part of the Whin Sill, a protruding mass of quartz-type rock that stretches some 125 kilometres across the northern part of England. This forms a natural defensive feature, and in 122 AD the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of a wall to defend Roman Britain from the Picts to the north. The central portions of the 118-kilometre-long wall were built on the Whin Sill.
