Caption: Coppiced woodland. View of an area of coppiced woodland. Coppicing is a traditional woodland management technique in which small areas of tree cover are temporarily cut back to allow plants on the ground to thrive. This encourages diversity amongst the plant species. Here, several purple orchids (Orchis mascula) can be seen amongst the stumps of the removed trees. When the trees grow back, a similar area will be removed from another part of the wood. Photographed in Honeypot wood, Norfolk, England.
