Caption: Measuring age of tree. Researcher with a core sample taken from the trunk of a tree. Each year a new layer of xylem (water conducting tissue) is laid down by the living, outer part of the trunk. By counting the resulting rings, the tree's age can be determined. This is part of the forest management work done by the French INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique or National Agronomic Research Institute).
