Caption: Alien flowering weed along roadside. Pink flowers of impatience (Impatiens sp. ) are seen growing among fronds of ferns in Hawaii. It was found on a roadside in rainforest in Volcanoes National Park on Big Island. Impatiens is an invasive weed originating from Africa. It is successful here, and may need to be controlled. In Hawaii it is thought 5 foreign plant and 20 insect species are introduced to the islands each year. This alien invasion requires "weedbusting" teams to search and destroy foreign plants with anything from herbicides to machetes. Plant weeds, like alien animals, may outcompete native species and destroy the rainforest ecology and wildlife.
