Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Artificial insemination of a cow. Veterinarian preparing a syringe containing a sample of bull semen, which will be used to artificially inseminate a cow (Bos taurus). The syringe, also known as a straw, is inserted into the vagina of the cow and the semen is ejected into the uterus. Artificial insemination allows farmers to manage the reproduction of their cows. They can control which cows become pregnant and are able to ensure the quality of the sperm by choosing between several stud bulls. In this way, herds can be selectively bred for particular traits, such as high milk or meat yields. Photographed in Michigan, USA.
