Caption: Desert flowers. View of a mixed community of blooming Mexican gold poppies (Eschscholtzia mexicana) and a cholla (or jumping) cactus (family Cactaceae). The flowers have all bloomed due to heavy rains in the area. Flower displays such as this are infrequent and short-lived. The chollas cactus is also known as the 'jumping cactus' because parts of the cactus will easily detach. This makes them extremely hazardous to humans and care must be taken when removing chollas spines impaled in the skin. The detachment is not a defence mechanism but part of the reproduction process. Photographed in Organ Pipe National Monument, Arizona, USA.
