Caption: Corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) growing by a stone wall. Poppies are a common weed in recently disturbed ground in Europe, Australia and America. Their seeds can live in the soil for 40 years, so crop fields must be regularly sprayed with herbicides. Poppies are annual herbaceous plants which grow to 40- 70 centimetres in height. Photographed in Agia Roumeli, Crete, Greece.
