Caption: Soya bean plants. Rows of soya bean or soybean plants, Glycine max, in a field which has been treated with herbicide. Soybeans are grown as a source of oil and protein. The plants also help to improve the soil by increasing levels of nitrogen, a chemical which acts as a fertiliser. Herbicide has been applied here to kill velvetleaf plants and grasses which grow between the rows of crops. Photographed in Illinois, USA.
