Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Chilli harvest. Farmer drying a harvested crop of chillis, Capsicum annuum, in a solar drier in order to preserve them. This drier, an example of intermediate technology, traps the heat of the Sun to dry chillis. As such it is environmentally friendly and cheap to operate. Chilli peppers are grown in tropical areas for flavouring foods such as curries and tabasco sauce. In their dried form they are also known as red or cayenne peppers. The solar drier was developed by the University of Stuttgart, Germany. Photographed in Zaire.
