Caption: Coffee plant. Historical artwork of a branch of a coffee plant (Coffea sp.) showing clusters of ripe fruits (red). These fruits are pale green when they first develop but ripen to deep crimson over 6-7 months, when they are ready for picking. Ripe fruits typically contain two seeds (yellow, bottom right), the coffee beans, surrounded by a sweet pulp. The beans are dried before being used commercially in the production of coffee. From Mathematische und Naturwissenschaften by Johann Geog Heck, 1860.
