Caption: Man winnowing rice after the harvest. Rice is a food crop derived from grass (Oryza sativa). It is reputed to be the staple food of one third of the world's population. Rice grains are separated from the chaff by winnowing. The harvested rice is placed on top of the suspended sieve and the grains fall through. Small pieces of debris are blown away on the wind as the rice grains fall. A buffalo (top left) is pulling a traditional wooden plough. Photographed near Lagaspi City on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.
