Caption: Aubergine harvest. Worker carrying a basket of aubergines (Solanum melongena). Aubergines, also called eggplants, grow on short bushy plants. The plants have a covering of fine woolly hair that makes them spiny and irritating to touch. The fruit is valued for its colour and flesh, and is often stuffed with other foods and baked. They are a good source of the mineral potassium. Aubergines were originally cultivated in India, but now are grown around the world. Photographed in Minnesota, USA.
