Caption: Rice terraces. Rice (Oryza sativa) is a cereal crop that is a staple part of the diet of around half of the world's population. It is grown extensively in southern and eastern Asia. These are the Long Ji rice terraces in China, which translates as the Dragon's Backbone Terraces. Whole mountains in this area have been converted to terraces for the cultivation of rice.
