Caption: Harvesting rice. The mature rice plants (Oryza sp.) have been cut down and are ready for threshing, a beating action that isolates the grain. Rice is one of the world's most important crops, its grains either being eaten whole or used as a source of starch for the production of alcohol. Whole grains of rice are a good source of carbohydrates, B vitamins, calcium and phosphorus. This cereal grows in areas which are warm and wet. Photographed in India.
