Caption: A field of flowering rape, Brassica napus. Rape is grown in Britain and Europe as green fodder for livestock and for its seeds, from which rape oil is extracted. Rape oil is edible, but is also used as an illuminant and lubricant and in the manufacture of soap. The cultivation of rape is encouraged as 'set-aside', where a proportion of a farmer's land is converted from cereal grain growth in order to prevent over-production and to 'rest' the soil. Rape has a characteristic bright yellow colour when flowering, and has a pollen to which many hay fever sufferers are particularly vulnerable.
