Caption: Maize planting. Mechanised planting of a crop of maize, Zea mays, in a field. The seed is contained within the mechanical planting machine that is being towed by the tractor. Maize is a good source of carbohydrate, dietary fibre, polyunsaturated oils, vitamin A and potassium. It can be eaten unprocessed or used to make flour. Its oils are also extracted for human consumption as part of products such as margarine. Maize is also used to make animal feed, alcohol, and is used to make synthetic materials. It is grown around the world in tropical and subtropical regions. Photographed in Illinois, USA.
