Caption: Weeding. Field labourers hoeing weeds in a field of lettuce. Weeds are any unwanted plants growing amongst crops. If weeds establish in the uniform habitat provided by large fields of a single crop such as lettuce they can spread rapidly. Weeds compete with the crop plants for light and soil nutrients and so can reduce the size of the harvest. Using a hoe to remove weeds by hand is a traditional method of weed control and is very labour intensive. More modern methods involve the use of chemical herbicides that can be used to rapidly treat a large area. Photographed in California, USA.
