Caption: Maize. Crop of maize plants (Zea mays) with the husks (leaf sheaths, lower left) peeled back to expose a fruiting body (or cob). Each cob contains numerous individual yellow kernels. The fibrous structures (upper right) are the female stigmas which are adapted to catch pollen grains. Maize is one of the world's most important crops. It can be eaten as corn-on-the-cob (as seen here) or the kernels are canned or frozen as sweetcorn. Maize is a good source of potassium and vitamin A, as well as being high in fibre. Photographed in San Joaquin Valley, California, USA.
