Caption: Alfalfa crop. Close-up of a field of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), sometimes called lucerne. Alfalfa is a nutrient-rich crop usually grown as feed for livestock. However, it is a very good source of the B-vitamins and the minerals potassium, magnesium and phosphorous, and is used as a dietary source of nutrients. It is also useful as it enriches the soil in which it grows, using nitrogen from the air to make nitrates, a natural fertilizer. Photographed in Wisconsin, USA.
