Caption: Agricultural research. Kohlrabi plants, Brassica oleracea caulorapa, growing in a greenhouse during an experiment into soil nutrients. In this experimental set-up, the kohlrabi have been planted in a layer of expanded clay particles which has been placed on a table like the one in the background at upper left. Within this greenhouse, the levels of light, humidity and temperature can be carefully controlled, as can the type and amount of nutrients reaching the plants. This allows scientists to determine the optimum nutrient levels required for plant growth. Kohlrabi is a type of cabbage which has an edible stem.
