Caption: Desert irrigation. Coloured SPOT-1 satellite image of desert irrigation in Saudi Arabia. North is at the top. Vegetation appears brown and red. This picture shows hundreds of irrigated discs of land around Salamiyah Oasis, 100km southeast of Riyadh. Each disc is watered by a rotating structure of 300 metres radius, covering a total area of 40 square kilometres. Most of the crops are cereals, such as wheat. Red dots are palm trees, which grow wild in the area. In northeast is a town, in the southeast a barren, rocky ridge. This part of the world receives an average annual rainfall of only 70mm. Image by French satellite SPOT-1 in May.
