Crop spraying. Light aircraft spraying herbicide onto a field of wheat (Triticum sp.). Aerial spraying is a useful way of applying chemicals where vehicles cannot travel without damaging crops. Herbicides are necessary in modern agriculture, since weeds, once established, can spread rapidly. These weeds will compete with the crop plants for light and soil nutrients and so can affect the size of the harvest. Here the herbicide is being sprayed to eradicate cloves and mustard. Photographed in California, USA.
