Caption: Epidendrum fragrans. Close-up of flowers of the orchid Epidendrum fragans, a native of the Amazon Rainforest. Orchids are unusual in having exquisitely adapted flowers. Many species are so specialised that they depend entirely on a single species of insect to pollinate them. The large bottom petal seen here, called the labellum, acts as a landing platform for visiting insects (usually bees). The sexual organs (pistil and stamen) are fused into a structure called a column, which deposits sticky pollen sacs on the visitor. Photographed in Ecuador.
