Caption: False-colour Landsat satellite image of Abu Dhabi showing land reclamation works in 1989. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The city occupies the island at centre, its pattern of roads clearly seen. Three airports are visible: one at the east (right) edge of the city, one further east in the desert and a third toward lower right from the city. Very extensive land reclamation has taken place, building on the shallow sediments in the coastal water (seen here as magenta), and many black deep-water channels have been dredged to serve the industrial area right of centre. Compare with earlier images, E780/293 (1979) and E780/294 (1984).
