Caption: Venice. Coloured multitemporal radar image of the city of Venice, Italy, and its surroundings. Venice is the pale grey area in the bay near centre. At centre left is the city of Padova. This image was made by combining frames taken at different times of the year. The overall brown and orange tones in the frame indicate growth of vegetation between the first and last frame (spring and autumn respectively). The colours in the sea at right denote changes in wave patterns and heights between frames, and give overlying tints to the sediment patterns in the water. The data for this image were gathered by the European ERS-1 radar mapping satellite.
