Caption: Early purple orchid (Orchis mascula) flowering in a meadow. This is a common orchid that grows throughout Britain and Europe. It is the first wild orchid to flower each year, and does so as early as April. The yellow flowers seen around it are buttercups (Ranunculus sp.). Photographed in Northumberland National Park, England.
