Caption: Istanbul. Coloured radar satellite image of the Turkish city Istanbul (centre left, white). North is towards the top. This image was made by combining three frames taken on different dates. Differences between the frames (due, for example, to agriculture) show as areas of colour. Unchanged areas are white or black. Istanbul lies on both sides of the Bosphorus, a narrow strait separating Europe (west) from Asia (east). To its north is the Black Sea, to its south the Sea of Marmara. The dead-ended channel of water on the European side is the Golden Horn. Ships in the water appear as coloured dots. Image produced by European Radar Satellite 1. Area approximately 100km x 100km.
