Rio de Janeiro. Infrared Landsat satellite image of Rio de Janeiro (blue area on west coast of enclosed bay at right), Brazil. North is towards the top. Areas covered by dense vegetation or forest appear red; the Atlantic Ocean is dark blue; urban areas, bare soil and grassland are pale blue; clouds are white. The name ("River of January") commemorates the arrival of Portuguese explorers in 1502, although there is in fact no river. Sugar Loaf Mountain (red) stands on a small peninsula at the entrance to the bay. Note the bridge crossing the bay to the town of Niteroi on the opposite bank.
