Caption: Baghdad. Infrared SPOT satellite image of Baghdad, capital of Iraq. North is towards the top. Vegetation appears red, water blue or green, roads and buildings grey or white. Running through the centre of the city is the River Tigris, crossed by numerous bridges. The smaller river running north- south to the right is the Diyala. A large airport can be seen in the southwest. Smaller airfields are visible in the centre and east of the city. Note the patchwork appearance of irrigated fields in the fertile plain surrounding Baghdad. Image data gathered by one of the French SPOT satellites.
