Caption: Naples. Infrared satellite image of Naples (at upper centre) and Mount Vesuvius (at upper right) in Italy. North is at top. In the infrared range, vegetation appears red, buildings are blue-grey and the Mediterranean Sea dark blue. Naples and its sprawling suburbs cover much of the upper frame but a patchwork of fields appear at top right and upper left. Naples is a tourism, ship- building and manufacturing centre. Mount Vesuvius, still an active volcano, buried Pompeii in AD 79; the city's ruins lie at its southeast foot. Image taken by the French SPOT satellite in October.
