Caption: Volgograd. Infrared satellite image of the city of Volgograd (at upper left), Russia. North is at top. In the infrared range buildings appear light blue, water is black, green vegetation is red and bare fields are grey. Volgograd stands on the River Volga which flows from top centre to far right. At upper right is a poorly-drained, low- lying area with many crescent-shaped ox-bow lakes. In the lower frame is a patchwork of agricultural fields and reservoirs. At far left are circles irrigated by centre-pivot sprinklers. At centre right is a petrochemical complex. Image taken in August by a French SPOT satellite.
