Caption: Bordeaux. True-colour satellite image of Bordeaux (bottom right) and the Gironde estuary (lower right to upper centre), France. North is at top. Urban areas such as Bordeaux appear grey. Forests are dark green, grazing lands are light green and crops are mostly yellow. Bare ground appears pale yellow, pale brown or almost white. Bordeaux lies on the Garonne River just before it flows into the Gironde estuary. Variations in colour in the Bay of Biscay (left) are due to depth, currents and river discharges. The estuary makes Bordeaux accessible to ocean-going ships. Image taken by the American Landsat-5 satellite. The smallest visible features are 30 metres across.
