Caption: San Jose. Coloured radar image of San Jose, Cali- fornia, USA, an area popularly known as "Silicon Valley" because of its high-technology industry. North is towards top left. Urban areas are red, white, and green. Water, such as San Francisco Bay (top centre), is black and salt evaporation pans are blue. Mountains are grey or green, apart from sparsely-vegetated areas which are black. San Jose lies in the Santa Clara Valley between the Santa Cruz (left) and Diabolos (right) mountains. The vertical line in the Santa Cruz mountains is the San Andreas fault. Image taken by space shuttle Endeavour's Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) in October.
