Caption: Baghdad, Iraq. This image was taken on 27th March 2003, during the attack by USA/UK-led forces. The thick smoke plume covering much of the city here is thought to be from an oil-filled trench that had been set alight to provide a smokescreen against aerial attacks. Baghdad is the capital city of Iraq, and stands on the Tigris river, part of which is seen at bottom left. This image shows the northeastern part of the city. Image taken by the QuickBird satellite.
