Caption: Monrovia, Liberia, satellite image. Monrovia is the capital city of Liberia in west Africa. It is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean (lower left), at the mouth of the Mesurado River (upper right). At top are the Old Bridge and the Gabriel Tucker Bridge. The population of Monrovia is estimated as 450,000 (2003). Monrovia was founded in 1822 by the American Colonisation Society as a haven for freed slaves from the USA and from the British West Indies. The city was named after James Monroe, the then President of the USA. This pan-sharpened image was taken with the QuickBird 1 satellite at a resolution of 60 centimetres.
