Caption: Building development on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, satellite image. The city of Cairo is surrounded by the deserts (pale brown) of North Africa, but development is continuing out into the sands. This complex of buildings and roads is on the extreme eastern edge of the city. Irrigation provides water for vegetation (green) to grow in this hostile environment. The outlines of further road development are seen at lower right. The data for this 2. 5-metre-resolution image were obtained by the Spot-5 satellite, which was launched in 2002. This image covers an area approximately 5.5 kilometres across.
