Caption: Mecca. Satellite view of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Mecca is the Islamic religion's holiest city being the birthplace of the founder of Islam, Mohammed. Followers of Islam must visit Mecca at least once in their life. The large white building in the centre of the image is the Great Mosque and within this building is the kabbah, the main focal point for pilgrims. During the main month of pilgrimage, known as hajj, Mecca is home to 2 million visitors. This image was taken by the Ikonos satellite, the first commercial satellite to collect data at one-metre resolution. Image taken on 1st January 2000.
