The Taj Mahal (centre) was completed in 1653 by the Mugal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The building is made from white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. It resides on the banks of the Yamuna river which flows through the city of Agra. The Taj Mahal is a UN World Heritage Site and a major tourist destination. This image was taken by the Ikonos satellite, the first commercial satellite to collect data at one-metre resolution.
