Khartoum, Sudan, satellite image. Khartoum is the Sudan's capital and second largest city. The large river seen here is the Blue Nile, just out of shot to the left is where the Blue and White Nile meet, before flowing north towards Egypt. There are numerous slums around the outskirts of the city populated by refugees that fled conflicts in Chad, Ethiopia and Uganda in the 1970s and 1980s. At bottom centre is Khartoum International airport. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 27 September 2000.
