Caption: Birmingham region. Satellite image of the area round the city of Birmingham (purple, lower left), England, including the newly built M6 Toll, a toll motorway that opened in December 2003. North is at top. Urban areas are purple, fields are red/green depending on vegetation cover, and water is dark blue. Clouds (white) are casting shadows. The area seen is about 90 kilometres from top to bottom. The M6 Toll (visible when image magnified) is 43.5 kilometres long and is just below centre, running around north Birmingham. Other cities (purple) include Stoke (top left), Coventry (bottom right) and Derby (top right). This image combines visible and infrared light. It was obtained by the Landsat 7 satellite.
