Caption: Colonia Dignidad, Chile. Satellite image of Colonia Dignidad (now called Villa Barbiera), a secretive settlement in southern Chile, founded by Paul Schafer, a former SS officer, in 1961. It is thought that Schafer used the settlement as a safe place to sexually abuse young children abducted from Europe. It is also thought that escaped war criminals, such as Josef Mengele, have hidden at Colonia Dignidad. CIA agents are believed to have trained at the site, preparing to overthrow Salvador Allende in 1973 and it is thought that it was used to torture political prisoners during Augusto Pinochet's subsequent presidency. Image taken on 31 May 2000 by Space Imaging's Ikonos satellite.
