Caption: Orchid flower (Bulbophyllum barbigerum). This side view of the flower shows the bearded lip of the flower at centre. The lip, a specialised petal, is what attracts pollinators to the flower. The rest of the flower is at upper right, and parts of some other flowers are also seen. This orchid is from central western Africa and grows on trees (it is an epiphyte). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
