Caption: Gaza City in the Gaza Strip, Quickbird satellite image. Gaza is a port on the Mediterranean Sea (black). With a population of around 400,000 it is the major city in the Gaza Strip, a piece of land bordering Israel and Egypt. Until September 2005 it contained Israeli settlers and military bases as well as a large Palestinian population. Israel pulled all the settlers out and dismantled its bases in a process that ended on 12th September 2005. It left the Gaza Strip under the control of the Palestinian Authority, but retained control of the adjacent sea and airspace. The Strip has a population of some 1.3 million, and the Palestinians hope it will become part of a true Palestinian state. Taken on 7th April 2004.
