Caption: Vatican City, Quickbird satellite image. The Vatican City is the smallest independent state in the world and is entirely surrounded by the Italian capital Rome. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church. This image was taken in April 2005, the month when Pope John Paul II died and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected, becoming Pope Benedict XVI. The predominant feature of the Vatican City is Saint Peter's Square (grey oval, centre left). At its left edge is Saint Peter's Basilica.
