Caption: Lhasa, capital of Tibet, satellite image. Tibet is currently an autonomous region of China, although this status is the subject of some controversy. It has a population of around 250,000 with a similar number in the surrounding area. Should Tibet ever gain independence from China, Lhasa will be the highest capital in the world, at nearly 3700 metres altitude. Photographed on 8th July 2005.
