Caption: San Francisco Bay, satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is green, water is blue, bare ground is shades of brown and urbanised areas are grey. San Francisco is a city in California, situated on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula (left). The peninsula separates San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The multicoloured areas on the southerly edge of the bay are salt pans used to derive mineral salts from river water entering the bay. The bright colours result from the minerals obtained.
